We all know what the word “average” means. It basically means the middle. You take a set of data common to a group add it up and divide by the number of group members and you have the average. What does above Average mean? Above average simply means anyone in a group that is in the top 50 percent of that group for a particular data set. The average is clear. Average is definable. There is always a middle in any data set. No one really can argue the average. It’s definitive.
As a group, black americans are a wide array of people with a wide array of talents and skills. We all use those talents in different ways. Some of us have certain talents that we use very well. Others might have untapped talents and haven’t exactly found their niche yet and are still finding it. Others may even use their talent in a negative way due to circumstances. Talent though when used collectively is undeniable. Often times when we show talent appropriation occurs. Appropriation has occurred consistently throughout time. It’s occurred in fashion, it’s occurred in music, it’s occurred in dance and a vast amount of other areas. Anyway, this article isn’t about appropriation. It’s about, defining an Above Average Black.
The Definition of an Above Average Black
Now let’s define an above average black. An above average black is a black person that has done above average things consistently for a long time. Above Average Black has nothing to do with money though money is one data set that could be used in determining an above average black. An above average black does not have to have money. An above average black is simply a black person that has done something at an extremely high or above average level consistently for a long time. The time element is important in determining an above average black because it’s very easy to do something at a high or above average level for a short time but it is much more difficult to do anything at an above average level for a long time.
How does one find an Above Average Black Person?
It’s easy to find an above average black in the sports and entertainment world. These black people are doing extraordinary things consistently for a long time. You see them everyday on your TVs and in your entertainment news daily. As an example, all you need to do is turn on the Golden State Warriors vs Cleveland Cavaliers 2018 NBA finals to see examples of above average blacks. Sports and entertainment is only one small example of above average blacks that exist. It’s the most visual example of an above average black that one can see but relatively speaking it’s a very small sample. The more intriguing above average black however is the everyday above average black person. The ones you find each and everyday in everyday life. The easiest way that I have found in identifying an above average black after some level of small talk is to ask one very simple question. The question is the following:
How long have you been doing X for?
The 5 year Above Average Black Criteria
If that person answers with a response that is greater than 5 years then it is highly likely than not that you have identified an above average black person. Once you have identified an above average black, if you ask even more background questions you will find some of the most intriguing answers known to man. The 5 year or above answer is an important gage because at 5 years or above that person is an expert at X. To put this in perspective, If you put this person in a room full of all other black people who does X the person that has done X for more than 5 years is most definitely in the top half of that group. Also, a black person that has done X for more than 5 years is likely the greatest at X when included in a wider group. The reason they are the greatest at X when included in a wider group outside of black people is because of what they needed to overcome to do X for such a long time as a black person.
What’s needed to become an Above Average Black?
There are really only 2 things a black person needs to become an above average black at anything.
- Do whatever It is that you are doing or interested in doing at a high level.
- Do number 1 consistently for a long time.
If you do the following 2 things above, you are or will be an above average black.
Can a person be an Above Average Black without meeting the 5 year criteria?
Yes, above average simply means being in the top half of a group when measured by a common data set. A black person can become an above average performer in a short amount of time. Once you get there you’ll want to stay there. It is very easy to fall out of the top half. There are constant pressures tugging at you throughout life that can easily make one regress out of the top half. This makes the 5 year criteria important. At 5 years the knowledge you’ve gained or mastered as an above average black can never be taken away. The 5 year measure makes it such that it is very difficult to fall out of the top half. The 5 year criteria is a quick measure that I use to quickly decide if I’m personally interacting with an above average black.

Average is simply being in the middle. The above average black has used his or her talent for a long time. An above average black is mostly considered above average when included in a wider group, especially those that meet the 5 year criteria. The above average black is found in all walks of life. They are an intricate parts of society and are positive contributing members of society. These are the people who you want first on your team because these are the people who will think differently than everyone else in the room. It’s to your advantage to learn their story.
